Adding Colours to the culture of India, the Karwa Chauth Festival is one of the famous festivals of married women of India. Karwa Chauth where Karwa stands for a pot and Chauth means the fourth. Karva Chauth is a one-day festival which is observed on the Chauth i.e. fourth day after the full moon in the month of Karthik.This festival is celebrated by women in India, where, married women keep fast from sunrise to moonrise for the safety, longevity, welfare of their husbands. Unmarried women also observe the fast for their fiances or desired husband.
This festival is commonly observed by north Indian women. It’s important to know the important factors of celebrating Karwa Chauth. It’s not a fast day but it’s a tradition and custom that observed by wife and those ladies who pray for long life of her husband before marriage.
Stories behind The Celebration of Karwa Chauth
There are many stories behind the celebration of Karwa Chauth in India. According to myths, When Savitri’s husband Satyavaan passed away, She refused to eat and drink and begged to God Of Death Yama to grant his life back. But Yama declined her request and asked for any other boon than giving her husband’s life back. Than Savitri asked him to bless her with a child. Yama granted her wish but Savitri protested that she can’t have children with any other man. Hence, Yama reluctantly had to bring Satyavaan back to life. So, this is the reason that why Indian Woman observed fasting for the whole day. That by doing so, they are extending the life of their husband.
Another myth related to the story of Karwa Chauth can be found in the epic Mahabharata. Where, Lord Krishna tells Draupadi that if a lady fasts of Karwa Chauth, than her every desire will be fulfilled and her significant other will be protected and blessed with safety, harmony, prosperity and long life. After that Draupadi followed Karwa Chauth fast and her issues got solved. Krishna also says that this fast was initially prompted by Lord Shiva to his significant other Parvati.
Another lore related with it is, there is a princess who did not keep her fast and eat something before the moon rose, was punished with the death of her husband.
Another one is that there was a girl with 7 brothers. She had come to her house after marriage and observed Karwa Chauth Vrat. She was very dear to her brothers that they couldn’t see her hungry and be waiting for the moon so they all tricked her into thinking that moon had come up which made her broken the fast kept for the long life of her husband and it results in the death of her husband’s life.
