Chatth Puja, also known as Chatth Parva, Dala Chhath or Surya Shashti is celebrated after 6 days of Diwali. The festival is observed in Shashti Tithi of Karthik Shukla Paksha and celebrated by the people of Northern India especially in the states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. The festival has already started and will end on 27th October 2017. The festival of Chhath Puja is a 4-day long affair which includes four days of worshipping Of God Sun or Surya Devta who is also known as the God of energy and the Chatthi Maiyaa(wife of Lord Sun).These 4 days includes 2 days of pre-festival procedures and 2 days of main fast.

This is one of the toughest fastings where you can eat or drink just one time in 72 hours.The rituals of Chhath Puja are rigorous and observed over a period of four days which includes holy bathing, fasting and abstaining from drinking water, standing in water for long periods of time, and offering prasad(prayer offerings) and Arghya(commodity offering) to the rising and setting sun. If the Vrat has started ones by the family, then it is necessary to perform the tradition and rituals of Chhath puja every year and to pass it on to the coming generations. The festival is skipped only if there any mishappening happens in the family that year. The prasad offering s include sweets, kheer, Thekua and fruit which is offered in small bamboo bowls. The food is strictly vegetarian and it is cooked without salt, onions or garlic. The main emphasis is put on maintaining the purity of the food.

In the early morning, people gather on the bank of the banks of river Ganga to express their gratitude and devotion towards Lord Surya. This festival is considered as the most eco-friendly Hindu festival as all the things required in performing the Puja rituals are obtained naturally.

Chatth puja is an emotional festival for the people of Bihar and Eastern UP. There is no caste boundary in Bihar for those 4 days and everyone is treated as equal and same. Chhath Puja is a kind of social gathering which is celebrated with the whole community, unlike Diwali and Holi which is celebrated by family and friends. People offer prayers to the almighty Lord Sun to endorse well-being, prosperity, and progress for the near and dear ones. In Hinduism, worshipping of the sun is supposed to cure a variety of diseases, including leprosy, besides ensuring the longevity and prosperity of family members, friends, and relatives.
