India is a land of different religions, beautiful culture, distinctive traditions, and rituals. Indian weddings embrace a number of traditions in accordance with the region they live in. Unlike other weddings, Uttarakhand weddings are simple and less lavishing. With the passage of time, you can still see Uttarakhand people follow their rituals and culture with great devotion. They perform many rituals like Suwal Pithai, Duliargh, Tehri Nath (nose ring) and traditional Rangwali Picchora. But apart from all these rituals, here we are stating about one of the most unique “tradition of the White and Red flag” followed in weddings of Kumaon region of Uttarakhand.
The White flag called as Nishan leads the marriage procession which represents Bridegroom and is followed by drummers, shehnai, nagada, pipers and a white palanquin carrying the Groom. The last man of the marriage procession carries another flag of Red color which represent beautiful bride side. After all the wedding rituals are conducted and fulfilled according to their tradition at bride’s home. Red flag takes the lead representing bride escorted by red palanquin (doli), succeeded by white palanquin (palki) of the groom. Now the last man of the wedding procession carries the white flag.
Kumaoni weddings represent their ethnic culture and traditions. If you ever get a chance to witness Uttarakhand wedding, don’t miss it and if you are Pahadi living far away from your motherland then it is must to visit your beautiful state once and acknowledge the wedding in the traditional way.
