The sound has its own significance and importance which is produced to ward off the evil eye away during any auspicious occasion like wedding, Griha Pravesh ceremony, namkaran ceremony or in Durga puja Or it can be understood as a holy sound that brings auspiciousness and drives out negative vibes.
Uludhwani? Exactly! the unusual sound produced by the Bengali women is known as Uludhwani. Or known as the sound produced by the woman of Kolkata. Ulu dhwani is not only a part of Durga puja but also other religious and social gatherings in Bengali household.The Uludhwani is basically a stri achar(women’s custom) meant for driving away evils from the holy gathering, mark an auspicious beginning to start of a ceremony and welcoming the lord.
The sound is made either by a group of Hindu Bengali women or by individuals. During worshiping God (Individual) – 3 Jhar (Might vary as per priests instruction when performed in a group)
For a newborn baby (Boy) – 9 Jhar
For a newborn baby (Girl) – 7 Jhar
During 4th day of wedding (at groom’s house) – 14 Jhar
During an earthquake – Continuous Jhar
