Every Hindu festival in India is celebrated with much exuberance, zest, and zeal. Chhath puja or called as Dalla Chhath is a northern state festival which is a four-day festival (including Nahay Khay, Kharna, sandhya Argha andUshaa Argha) observed on Shashti tithi of Kartik month in Shukla Paksha. People observe strict fasting for 4 days without eating and drinking and offer prayers to Lord Sun and his beloved wife Goddess Usha at the banks of sacred Ganga river, Kosi river to get blessed with long-life and prosperity and take holy dips. Chhath puja since long years ago has many myths and legends associated with it. The woman who observes fast is called Vrattin. The preparation of Chhath puja starts right after the festivity of Diwali over. People clean up their houses and kitchen in order to prepare offerings to lord Sun.
The Significance Of Chhath Puja:
Worshipping to lord sun is of great significance in Hinduism since the ancient time. Offering water to lord sun after free oneself by taking bath is an old age tradition which improves the state of mind and soul and boosts up health. People undergo the rituals in order to thank God and show gratitude and affection towards the God of energy, the Sun for sustaining life on beautiful planet Earth. Sun is the source of life, the rain, fruits, plants and every living being. Worshipping provides calmness to the mind, prevent diseases, enhance better energy level and free oneself for negative energy.
Chhath Vrat Katha:
There was a King named Priyavrat and his wife Malini. Though they were blessed with everything but still was living a unhappy life because they have no child. Once, they did Yagya with the help of Maharishi Kashyap in order to be blessed with a baby. soon king’s wife got pregnant due to the outcome of the Yagya done for a child but she had given birth to a dead child after the crucial period of nine months. Disheartened and sad, king Priyavrat decided to end his life by committing suicide. When he was about to suicide, a Goddess appeared in front of him and said ” I am goddess Shashti. I bless couple with baby. If someone would offer prayer with purity, he would surely bless with a child.” King priyavrat performed the puja on the auspicious day of Shashti tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month with the rituals associated with the puja and got blessed with a baby. Since then, it is celebrated as chhath puja from times immortal.
