• Weddings Of Uttar Pradesh
There is a small town named Sarsaul in Uttar Pradesh where the wedding procession or the bridegroom’s family is welcomed with the tomatoes instead of garlands, flower petals or rose water and performing the aarti. It is considered that the sacred relationship or the Mangal Parinay that started with such a tradition ends up in deep love and care between the bride and the groom.
• Bengali Weddings
Rituals performed in Bengali weddings are a delight to watch. These weddings are incorporated with many rituals. One is, saat paak where bride enters the wedding mandap covering her face with betel leaves sitting on a Piri (wooden seat) lifted by bride’s brothers and encircles 7 times around the groom. On other tradition, the female relatives of bride’s side perform Ganga aarti to invite goddess Durga to the wedding. It is believed that holy Ganga water blesses the bride for her upcoming life.
• Punjabi Weddings
Punjabi weddings are conducted with so many beautiful customs and traditions. One such tradition that is followed in Punjabi weddings is Ghada Ghadoli. This ritual takes place at bride’s house at the day of wedding where bride’s mother and brother’s wife (bhabhi) goes to nearby temple, gurudwara carrying a Ghada or pitcher pot over her head to bring holy water. The bride has to take bath with the holy water before putting up the wedding attire to get sacred blessings. The same ritual also takes place at groom’s house where his sister-in-law brings sacred water from nearby temple or gurudwara for groom’s bath.
• Kumaoni Weddings
Kumaon weddings are a simple and traditional affair. There is an unusual tradition takes place in the kumaoni wedding is the ritual of the white and red flag. The white flags known as nishaan leads the marriage procession which represents groom in a white palanquin and the red flag represent the beautiful bride in red palanquin along with drummers, shehnai, and nagada.
• Weddings Of Bihar
Some rituals are organized to test the ability of the bride. Bihar wedding is one such example. The mother-in-law of the bride puts an earthen pot on the bride’s head after the completion of the wedding ceremony. The bride has to touch everyone’s feet managing the balance between the earthen pots while bending to touch the feets of the elders. This ritual is solemnized to check the abilities of the bride if she can take the responsibilities of the new home.
• Tamil Brahmin Weddings
The most unusual tradition practised in the Tamil Brahmin weddings is kasiyatrai, where the groom changes his mind right before entering the mandap and decides to become sanyasi but the respected father of the bride makes him understand the importance of wedding and convinced him to marry her daughter. The groom then agrees to get married and performs all the rituals wholeheartedly.
